If anyone deserved the respect of the Corinthian believers, it was the apostle Paul. Yet in his second letter to the church at Corinth, we find Paul defending his character and credibility against the malicious attacks of false apostles. Rather than highlighting his personal strengths, amazingly, Paul points to his weaknesses! Paul's approach reveals one of the paradoxes of God's kingdom: God's strength was made perfect through the apostle's weakness. So it remains today. God's sufficiency shines in the face of our insufficiency, and his most powerful work is accomplished through us when we acknowledge our weakness and complete dependence on him.
